A week after the photos in the Munson Park gallery were taken, Mythos, one of our new members returned with me after permission was gained to tour the private property over the hill from the park. The previous day I had gone there with Sue and the grandchildren for a picnic outing. In the little stream that runs at the base of the hill where the stone wheels are embedded in a retaining wall, I discovered some Moqui Marbles in a sandstone boulder. I tried to remove them intact with only partial success. These were made of silvery pyrite which also occurs in the lignite forest near Enos, Oklahoma across the lake.

The real discovery, however, came a few feet away from the Moqui Marbles. At first it looked like a pebble with a perforation, but when I picked it up and cleaned the gravel adhering to it, it turned out to be a broken hammer head with green verdigris covering it. I took it home thinking it was likely a 19th century artifact since it looked hand forged.

The next day I returned with Mythos,(Linda Pollaro) to search the little creek on the other side for more of the stone wheels which have their origin in the hill Munson Park sits upon. Some of these are still embedded in the lawn which covers the park. Those in the retaining wall, far from being imported from the Red River or the nearby sand mines, likely were found as the road through the park was graded. Some are wheels while others are table like hemispheres with two flattened sides, the bottom being about half the diameter of the upper.

We found numerous outcrops of the bedrock, with numerous fossils but no wheels. Continuing to the next hill along the gravel road we found a perfect little stone wheel about two feet in diameter being used for a pothole filler. Linda didn't think the owner of the property would mind me adding to my personal collection, so I threw into the back of my truck and we continued to look for more anomalies. That is when I found a greenish metallic lump of rock with crystals embedded throughout.

The hammer turned out to be pure copper. The metallic lump turned out to be copper ore. Paoli Mine in Oklahoma is the nearest known source of copper ore that I have found so far and it is about 180 miles from where this lump was found. Sadly, the persons who had placed the stone wheel in the pothole made a big issue of its removal and could not be persuaded or bribed. So I returned it to avoid acrimony. I suppose it will now be driven over until it once more becomes sediment eroding down the hill. Such is PROGRESS. Evil or Very Mad
