Subject: First look at the bird
Charlie:
I finally grabbed a moment to have a look at the "bird". My technician had nipped a very small bit from an inobtrusive part of the specimen and prepared two polished sections from them. These marginal parts of the specimen are very oxidized to various iron oxides and oxyhydroxides. One can see only very wormy relicts of the iron, which are interstitial to the oxidation products. These bits contain so little unoxidized iron that they are not attracted by a strong magnet.
The very advanced oxidation suggests that we are dealing with cast iron, rather than a steel alloy, which would be much more resistant to oxidation. I could send you some microphotographs, if I can get on the photomicroscope later this week. We could also check the composition on the SEM, but I would be looking for a negative result, i.e. nothing but iron and possibly carbon in the metal...

I had a look at the material from the "bird". It is definitely a metallurgical product, looking like dross from iron making. It is fairly complex in composition. I will bring the "bird" and results with me, and we can try to figure what to make of it.
