I found this link when an old one I had on the use of sintered platinum and arsenic tuned up as a dead link. It is quite technical but it should give some insights as to what was is presently known of the complexity of PreColumbian metallurgy in the Americas. Keeping in mind that the origins of civilization in the Americas is being pushed back almost weekly, the possiblility of an early metal using culture is no longer the sole province of the "fringe". As advanced cultures are now known to have existed during the Bronze Age in the Americas, Caral, Poverty Point, etc. it remains now for those of you investigating possible early metal using sites to get some confirmed dates.
