While looking around for the origin a sigil posted on one of the forums I came upon this interesting comparison between similar symbols in Idaho and those of the Indus Valley/Harrapan culture.

In particular, take note of the "lollipop" symbol as John and Dee nicknamed it. John found it illustrated in a pamphlet at Aztec, New Mexico, on Indian rock art symbols.
Here is the page on the Idaho symbols. Be sure to read the second part as well as the other links on that page. There is also discussion of Sumerian and Phoenician symbols. Some of the ideas the author presents may seem a little "out there" to some readers, but this is, after all, Anarchaeology.com. Cool

Additionally, my search this morning led me to dust off my copies of Marija Gimbutas' Civilization of the Goddess and Language of the Goddess which provide some of the most intriguing artifacts from the European Neolithic to be found in mainstream literature, though Gimbutas certainly got her share of criticism from her colleagues. The recent discoveries at Gobekli Tepe and Narvali Corvi dating to 10,000 BC certainly show that Gimbutas was way ahead of the pack in terms of pushing the origins of civilization way past Sumer.
